It is the time of year when past years events are summarised and achievements listed. The last three years I have gone through the self-imposed, agonising and painstaking task of selecting my best 10 photos from the past year. The original idea comes from Martin Bailey while I was his apprentice at the Arcanum. The task is to select the best of the best shots from the last year. The candidate photos should have been both shot and edited during the last year. The challenge is, of course, to select only a limited number from all the photos taken. A very painful exercise, but at the same time very useful. It helps honing the skill of selecting the winners from the non-winners, and it forces you to think of each photo individually but also to consider the collection as a whole. The result is 10 photos that is representative of the photographic interests and skill level of the past year. Hopefully it should also be possible to see an improvement, or at least a change, over the years.
